Read full description of the books:

Unlike most of Grace Livingston Hill's books, this takes place in the early 1800s instead of the late-19th or early-20th century. The main character was christened Jemima Van Rensselaer as her father wanted, but her mother had wanted to call her Dawn so that is what she prefers, especially since she lost her mother at a young age--which was also something her father wanted: he kicked her out. When Dawn's a little older, her father and stepmother send her away to a Quaker-run school, and when she's 16 her father and stepmother marry her off in a move that is in their best interest rather than hers. Although she is interested in getting away from that stepmother, and the father who had banished her mother... Does Dawn get her happily-ever-after? Or...does she make her own way toward it by her own efforts? If you've read GLH's MARCIA SCHUYLER and/or EXIT BETTY, you might enjoy sojourning with DAWN.

"The stranger was younger, yet with an older look in his eyes, as if they had been living longer than the rest of his face." (Location 254)

"The habit of her life had been always to follow the stronger nature. In this case it was Madam Winthrop." (Location 831, among scenes that reminded me of a 1956 film, "Panic in the Parlour, aka Sailor Beware.")

"'How you talk! One would think you didn't love Harrington.' 'Well, I don't very much, and that's a fact...I don't see why I should love him if I don't, just because he happens to belong to the same family.'" (Frank talk from a "kid sister"--one of GLH's many "Bettys"--at Location 858-874)

"The air was fine and rare, the sky clear, with not a fleck of cloud to mar the blue--a blue that fairly called attention to itself as being bluer than ever before." (Location 920)

"They were both very young and very happy just then, and what are hows and whys to such as they?" (Location 1904)

"a little gray girlhood, which had nevertheless become bright in comparison to the new life." (Location 2063)

"Besides, it was against the law in those days for any one to travel unnecessarily on the Sabbath day. Dawn never thought of doing so, any more than she would have contemplated the possibility of stealing." (Location 2373)

"'She's like a flea: when you think you have her, she's somewhere else.'" (Location 3351)

"She was beginning to feel as if she must have been half asleep when a good many important events in her life happened. Was she half asleep now, she wondered idly?" (Location 3820)

Thanks for reading! Good night, and have a lovely tomorrow.
